First tropical nights in European city centres

High temperatures are currently observed in some European cities, and some even experienced the first tropical night of the year.

Central Europe is currently influenced by a stable, high-pressure system that leads to sunny conditions and high temperatures.

Some regions in Central Europe exceeded temperatures of 30°C over the last weekend and had the first hot days (=max daily temperature > 30°C) of the year. Additionally, in some European cities, the air temperatures in the city centre during the night did not drop below 20°C (as shown in the heat map for Zurich), which is considered as tropical night.

Our meteoblue heatmaps show real-time air temperatures that are hourly updated with a spatial resolution of 10 x 10 m. This tool allows the monitoring of air temperatures in more than 80 cities worldwide. As can be observed in the heat maps, the minimum air temperatures in the city centre of Zurich and Frankfurt did not drop below 20 degrees Celsius during the night from Saturday to Sunday. In meteorology, this is called a “tropical night”. Many tropical nights endanger the life and health of vulnerable parts of citizens, as recovery during the night is inhibited due to the high temperatures. In the next days, more tropical night are expected.

Stay cool, and find the coolest place in your city with our heat maps.
