Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the weather in Paris

A Spectacular Summer Extravaganza is coming close. The urban heat island effect can influence the competition. We have analysed the competition venues in the city.

The City of Light is set to shine even brighter this summer as Paris welcomes the world to host one of the biggest sports events this year: the 2024 Olympic Games! From July 26 to August 11, the French capital will transform into a grand stage for athletes and spectators alike, with the iconic landmarks of Paris serving not only as stunning backdrops but also as venues for sports events.

But this is not the only reason the event is set to be one of the year's hottest highlights: Due to its urban density, Paris has a much warmer climate than the rest of the Île-de-France region. This phenomenon, known as the "urban heat island" (UHI) effect, results from the high concentration of buildings, roads, and infrastructure that absorb and retain heat within the city.

To illustrate this, the following map shows the Urban Heat Index for Paris. For example, at the Olympic venue near the Eiffel Tower, temperatures could be around 3°C higher than the surrounding areas, whereas around Les Invalides, the increase is expected to be just 1.6°C. To cool down, the venues in the countryside of Paris are best suited. At the Castle of Versailles, where the equestrian events will take place, the temperature is expected to be around 1°C less due to vegetation’s cooling effect.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations. To stay safe during heatwaves, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, use sun shading, and spend time in cooler green spaces like parks or close to the water of the Seine.

As temperatures soar, visitors can beat the heat and enjoy the best of Parisian hospitality at several cooling spots around the city. Discover serene moments at the lush gardens of Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Luxembourg, or take a refreshing dip at the Bassin de la Villette, Paris' largest artificial lake. For a unique experience, the cooling misters at Parc André Citroën provide a delightful respite.

Whether you're cheering for your favourite athletes or exploring the vibrant city, Paris 2024 promises an unforgettable summer of sport, culture, and relaxation. Follow the local weather developments in the city with our hyper-local city climate predictions.
